The History of Martha Renfrew

Martha Renfrew was born Martha Brown in Scotland on June 11th, 1811.
In 1852, in Scotland, Martha married Thomas Renfrew.
In Scotland, birth, marriage or death certificates did not exist before 1855.
In an extract from the 1852 Registrar, two dates were listed for Thomas Renfrew and Martha Brown.  The first date was September 5th and the second date was September 12th.
On those dates, an announcement was made that the couple intended to marry.  This was called the Calling of the Bans and was made shortly before a marriage ceremony took place.
NOTE:  With the above information, we can assume that Thomas Renfrew and Martha Brown were married within a few weeks of September 12, 1852.
In 1870, Thomas and Martha boarded a ship named The Dorian and headed for America from a Port in Glasgow, Scotland.  They arrived at the Port of New York on June 15, 1870.  The Captain of The Dorian was Captain Young and the Ship was a Steamer class.
NOTE:  On the New York Passenger Lists, Thomas Renfrew is listed as being born in 1824 and Martha Renfrew is listed as being born in 1819.  While record keeping was not 100% accurate in the 1800's, we have yet to determine why there was such a large discrepancy listed.  Thomas was actually born in 1819 and Martha was born in 1811.
From New York, Thomas and Martha made their way to Fall Brook, in Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Thomas and Martha lived together in Fall Brook until Thomas' death in 1877.
By 1880, Martha had moved in with the Deck Family, living in Peale, Pennsylvania.  Her grandson, James Reid, moved with her.
NOTE:  P.R.F. is seeking information regarding James Reid.  No records or information have been found that lists any children born to Thomas and Martha.
On May 16, 1886, Martha passed away and was buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Peale, Pennsylvania.  Her headstone displays "Died May 16, 1886 - Aged 74, 11 months and 5 days."  Martha's headstone is the only remaining grave marker at the Oakwood Cemetery.  Her epitaph simply states:  "I was".

James Reid, Grandson of Martha (Brown) Renfrew

The last known residence of James Reid was Glen Richey.

In The Clearfield Progress, on August 22, 1941, Page 10, James Reid was listed on a Civil Court Jury List.

The first week of civil court will be the week opening September 2, 1941
Jury List Excerpt:  Reid, James A., retired, Glen Richey

In an article in The Clearfield Progress on December 11, 1936, James Reid submitted a newspaper article for publication regarding the Coronation of Queen Victoria.  During this time, the world wide interest was centered on the British Throne as the result of the King Edward-Mrs. Simpson Affair.

Excerpt:  "...Mr. Reid was given the paper by his grandfather, Thomas Renfrew, who was born in Scotland in 1819 and died in 1877.  Mr. Renfrew came to this country and formerly lived in Fall Brook in Tioga County..."
